Profit As An Author By Getting Your Book Published Print E-mail
Written by John McLauchlan

Are you the kind of person that has always wanted to get your ideas published in a book? The title of published author can open many doors of opportunity, but getting your book published is often met by many closed doors and dead ends.

In this series of articles I'll show you the exact process to go through to successfully get your book published, into the market and making profit.

In this age of digital technologies like the Kindle reader and other digital devices that you can read books from, you'd have thought that the traditional paper and print book would be seeing a decline, with more people opting for the convenience of digital platforms.

Of course if you're writing anything as an author with an intention to publish your work to make a profit you should know who your target market is, and whether they prefer print and paper books, downloabable books on Amazon Kindle, or a more niche orientated book market, although getting accurate research can be a little tricky, as people can often choose between physical products and downloadable products based on convenience.

So to address this issuue of convenience, this series of articles will show you how to publish your book on lots of popular platforms, to get your book product to as many readers in whatever format they find convenient at the time.

We'll be looking at book publishing for the retail book market using paper and print publishing, how to publish your book for Amazon Kindle readers, turning your product into an audio book, in addition to that, I'll also be covering how to distribute your book worldwide, pricing your book properly with book wholesalers and getting your book into bookshops, while marketing your book as a brand developing the possibilities of selling the rights to your title for the TV and film industry.

...Let's Get Started!

The First Critical Step

Before we get too carried away, ask yourself one question that will either set you off on the road to becoming a successful published author, or reach a dead end.

The question is - Can You Actually Write?

The biggest stumbling block for most authors are their own perceptions of what they've written. A good exapmle of this is the X Factor, America's Got Talent type singing competitions where some singers audition sounding like a strangled cat. They many think that they sound good and can sing in tune, and get upset when they are told to go away.

Writing is no different, so give yourself half a chance by listening to qualified critique and taking it on the chin, remember that your best fan will be family and friends, so don't expect much constructive criticism from them, because they don't want to hurt your feelings on something you've put a lot of time and energy into.

A good place to start could be your local college or university, and seeking an expert in the topic you've written about, or a creative writing tutor.

One thing I've found is that when you take an active interest in something, people from within the education industry are generally receptive to calling on their expertise just as long as you appreciate their time.

If the expert critique you recieve is non too complimentary then take steps to either change things or reconsider your future as a serious writer.

If you find that people overall like your book then consider submitting your manuscript to one of the many paid editing services priot to finalising your manuscript for publishing.

Do Your Research

A book is a product and with any product you need to know your target market, you need to know who you're writing to before you write anything.

Your research will tell you if anyone will be interested in buying your book, research will tell you where your readers are on the internet, and based on proper research you'll have the ability to see whether a book project will be financially viable.

The common problem amongst writers and would-be book authors is spending time writing, then ask the question, who would be interested in buying the book.

Never under estimate the value of good research in any project you do.

Getting An ISBN

An ISBN - International Standard Book Number will be present on most books that have been published by a publisher, you can see the ISBN identified on the bar code, and inside on the title verso pages.

If you want to publish a book you'll need this number, and the ISBN will have to be registered to each book title. Obtaining your ISBN takes a little knowledge of the book that you intend to write, but other than that, as long as you know where to get your ISBN numbers from, the process is straightforward, and the process is covered in these articles.

Printing & Distribution

Finding a good printer at the right price is important so you can make some profit, however distribution and setting up complete supply chain and retail processing systems is one of the most important factors in being recognised as a serious author and profiting from your efforts.

Ultimately, there are a lot of things to consider when setting out to publish your book whether you use a publisher or you want to go along the route of publishing yourself, here I'll show you the plan to get your work published, and identify the common mistakes and pitfalls so you can successfully stride over the hurdles to success.
